Please Do Not Honk

This page is a bit of a hodge-podge.  It's not quite a blog, although it may end up that way.  Here I'll be talking about things I'm working on, maybe some recommendations on music to check out, or any new places in St. Paul to grab a late night bite after the gig.

April 5, 2011.  Lately I've been revisiting the music of Bix Beiderbecke.  A few years back I picked up the boxed set by Mosaic Records featuring Bix and for the past couple weeks I've been transcribing some solos and playing along.  The remastered sound on Mosaic is, as usual, fantastic though I can only wonder what he sounded like live.

Below if a four bar intro that Bix played on the tune "Trumbology."  It was recorded on February 4, 1927 by "Frankie Trumbauer and his Orchestra with Bix and Lang."  The tempo is about quarter note = 188.  I enjoy running this in all twelve keys.  I'm assuming Bix improvised this, if not I may be hearing from the Trumbauer estate.
